LAGOS- Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has called on Nigerians to support  families of fallen heroes.

He urged the citizens to prioritise upbringing of children of fallen heroes and care for their widows.

Sanwo-Olu made the call at the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration held at the Remembrance Arcade, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, on Wednesday.

The governor was represented by his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat.

He gave the assurance that his administration would continue to collaborate with ex-servicemen and listen to their concerns.

The governor said it was important to honour the nation’s fallen heroes because of the ultimate sacrifice they made to ensure the  country’s security and peace.

He said: ” This  annual event is a tribute to brave men and women, who have laid down their lives in service to the nation.

“Citizens must take responsibility for the welfare of the families of fallen heroes, ensuring they are well taken care of.

“It should be our collective responsibility in supporting those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the country’s freedom and security.”

The Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Lagos State Council, Mr Akeem Wolimo, expressed gratitude to the government for support.

“We appeal for more support in order to fulfill the responsibility of the legion, which is the representative of ex-servicemen.

“We urge the government to provide more for the needs of officers and men of the armed forces.

“We also call on well-meaning Nigerians to support ex-servicemen for better welfare,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that highpoints of the event include firing of rounds volley, laying of wreaths, and the release of ceremonial pigeons and balloons by the governor.
