ABUJA – As Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Seyi Makinde resist pressure to step down, questions are mounting: *Who exactly is the G-100, and who is funding the push to force a single opposition candidate for 2027?
The G-100, described as “a coalition of political groups and stakeholders advocating a united opposition front,” held its first Alliance Summit at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. But behind the name, a network of power brokers is at work.
Who Is The G-100?
According to G-100 member *Ambassador Umanu Elijah*, the group is made up of “political groups and stakeholders” working to select a consensus candidate before September 30.
Elijah said: “We had our first summit recently in Abuja with the opposition political parties and their presidential candidates… Meetings are going on behind the scenes.”
But G-100 has not published a full list of its members, financiers, or sponsors. That secrecy is fueling speculation.
#### *The Agenda: One Ticket To Face Tinubu*
Sources within the summit tell Blueprint the G-100’s mandate is clear: prevent a repeat of 2023 where the opposition vote was split between Atiku, Obi and others, handing victory to APC’s Bola Tinubu.
The plan is to sit Obi, Atiku and Makinde down and pick ONE of them as the consensus candidate. The other two are expected to step down and campaign for the chosen person.
Why Atiku, Obi, Makinde Are Resisting
The resistance from the 3 frontrunners exposes the tension.
Atiku’s Camp: Sources say Atiku believes he already built the ADC as the opposition platform. “Atiku is ahead of them… that is why we have the ADC today,” an aide said. Translation: _We don’t need G-100 to tell us who should lead._
Makinde’s Camp: APM says Makinde is “in the race to win, not for a joke.” They argue Makinde could even emerge as the G-100 consensus pick.
Obi’s NDC: Says Obi is “one of the best” and has “a strong chance of emerging as the consensus candidate.”
Who Is Bankrolling It?
While G-100 has not named donors, political watchers say the group is being driven by:
1. Retired Generals & Elders – Veterans who fear another fragmented opposition in 2027
2. Business Moguls – Northern and Southern billionaires who met at the Yar’Adua Centre summit
3. Civil Society Leaders – Pushing for “unity” to defeat APC
The involvement of the Yar’Adua Centre itself suggests backing from establishment figures linked to the late President Umaru Yar’Adua’s political family.
Other Parties Cry “Elite Arrangement”
Not everyone is buying it.
Sowore/AAC: “A single candidate without a common ideology… is merely another elite arrangement.”
ADP: “Our candidate is not stepping down for anybody.”
DLA: “We don’t subscribe to a single presidential candidate.”
They accuse G-100 of trying to impose a candidate from Abuja without grassroots input.
The Sept 30 Deadline
Elijah insists G-100 will announce a consensus name by Sept 30 and “ask other candidates and parties to support” it.
But with Atiku, Obi and Makinde all saying NO to stepping down, the deadline may pass with no agreement — and the opposition could head into 2027 divided.
