Letters from Stockholm
There was a time when the name Adams Oshiomhole meant something in Nigeria. President of the Nigeria Labour Congress. The man in the khaki jacket who stood with workers against fuel price hikes, who faced down governments, who was called Comrade and earned it.
That man is gone.
In his place stands a Deputy Director-General for Mobilisation in the 2027 re-election campaign of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, appointed on 22 August 2026, telling Nigerians with a straight face that Tinubu is a man of integrity and that you cannot find corruption among APC party members.
Read that sentence again. You cannot find corruption among our party members. This, about a party whose own campaign council the opposition has publicly described as a rehabilitation centre for corruption suspects. This, about a president ranked by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project among the most corrupt leaders in the world. This, while the Lagos-Calabar highway contracts sit unaudited, while the FOIA files in American courts remain part of the public record, while Nigerians queue for fuel in a nation floating on oil.
When a man who once fought for the masses begins to speak like this, we do not need to ask who paid him. We need only ask what he traded, and the answer is the same thing every courtier trades: the trust of the people who once believed him.
So what can the suffering masses do? Three things.
Remember. Document every statement, every contract, every honour bestowed on the connected. Memory is the first act of resistance.
Refuse. Do not let them launder reputations through repetition. A lie told by a former comrade is still a lie.
Register. The 2027 election has a date. INEC has released the timetable. Every PVC is an answer to every man who thinks Nigeria can be mobilised like cattle.
The comrade is dead. But the people he abandoned are very much alive, and they are watching.
