Governor Fubara Makes Triumphant Return to Rivers State Government House After Six-Month Suspension

Port Harcourt, Nigeria – Rivers State erupted in celebration on Friday as Governor Siminalayi Fubara officially resumed duties at the Government House, ending a dramatic six-month suspension and restoring civilian leadership to the oil-rich state.

The governor’s comeback follows President Bola Tinubu’s September 17, 2025 decision to lift emergency rule, which had placed both the executive and legislative arms of the state under federal control amid a bitter political crisis.

Jubilant Welcome in Port Harcourt

Fubara landed at Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, to a hero’s welcome. Supporters lined the streets, waving banners, chanting solidarity songs, and calling his reinstatement a “victory for democracy.”

The festivities continued outside the Government House, where crowds danced and cheered as the governor made his first public appearance since his suspension.

Background to the Political Standoff

Governor Fubara was suspended in March 2025 following an intense power struggle with members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The crisis—marked by impeachment threats, budget blockades, and violent security breakdowns—prompted Tinubu’s administration to invoke Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution, imposing emergency rule for the first time in Rivers since 1999.

President Tinubu justified the move as a necessary step to safeguard critical infrastructure and restore order after months of escalating tension.

With the emergency lifted and his mandate restored, all eyes are now on Fubara’s next moves—from rebuilding trust within the state legislature to delivering on long-delayed development projects that stalled during the political turmoil.
