ABUJA – The Campaign for Democracy, Human Rights Advocacy Civil Society Organisation in Nigeria, has commended the Nigerian military for its efforts in the fight against insecurity in the country.
The group, however, called for increased support from all levels of government to end terrorism and kidnapping, following the Jos Easter attacks and other incidents in Niger and Nasarawa states, as well as other parts of the country.
The call was on Friday in Abuja in a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of its North-Central Zone, Dr Abdullahi Jabi, and its Secretary-General, Toye Ayobami, at the end of its 82nd North-Central Zonal Executive Committee meeting held recently in Minna.
While commiserating with the governors of Plateau, Niger and Nasarawa states, the group noted that increased support from government would enable the military to record more success in combating insecurity, particularly terrorism.
Reports that the Nigerian Army on Thursday disclosed that it had neutralised no fewer than 10 terrorists during coordinated offensives in Plateau.
The group noted that the challenges of insecurity had led to massive displacement of people from their ancestral homes, loss of livelihoods and increased poverty, especially in rural communities.
“We commiserate with the governor of Plateau over the recent bloody attacks and killings of innocent citizens in Jos.
“We also commiserate with the governors of Nasarawa and Niger states over the challenges of insecurity leading to the displacement of people from their natural homes.
“The situation has resulted in socio-economic disruption, especially in rural communities, caused by enemies of the state. There is an urgent need for decisive action, including the deployment of technology to address this perennial problem,” it stated.
The group congratulated the 25th Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on his appointment, noting that Nigerians were counting on his wealth of experience, knowledge and skills to transform the Nigeria Police Force for competitive service delivery within the global community.
They said this was particularly important with the committee set up to formulate policy guidelines for the creation of community policing to bridge gaps and reduce crime and criminality in society.
The group assured the IGP of its support and readiness to partner with him in the discharge of his constitutional duties to ensure the safety of lives and property in Nigeria.
It also appealed to leaders of opposition political parties to conduct their activities in line with the constitution, respect court orders and refrain from inciting violence.
“We shall continue to encourage all stakeholders to do the right thing to ensure the survival of democracy beyond 2027 in Nigeria,” it said.
