Gunmen Burn Down Police Station In Aba, Kill Two Officers

by Joy: News Admin

Two policemen have been killed and three others injured after gunmen attacked the Uratta Police Station in Aba, Abia State, in the early hours of Saturday.

The attack occurred around 2 am. The assailants set parts of the station ablaze and burnt a Hilux patrol van and other vehicles.

Sources said the gunmen appeared to have targeted the station’s armoury but found it empty. They were said to have carted away some police uniforms during the attack.

The source added that one of the attackers was shot dead but his body was taken away by his colleagues.

Abia State Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, confirmed the killing of the two officers and injury to three persons, including a civilian, while inspecting the scene alongside Governor Alex Otti on Saturday.

Afolabi said the injured victims are receiving treatment at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba.

“The hoodlums came. Some of the shelters above were set ablaze,” he said.

He said he arrived at the scene around 4 am and that the immediate priority is to identify and arrest those responsible.

“For now, we have not made any arrests, but we are working on that,” the CP said, assuring residents that the attackers will be brought to justice.

Governor Otti later visited the injured victims at the hospital.

The attack has renewed concerns over insecurity in the area. On February 23, 2021, gunmen had attacked the same Uratta Police Station, killing a police sergeant identified as Okezie and burning a patrol vehicle donated by the state government.
