ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has strongly refuted a recent online report linking the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day parade to an alleged attempted military coup, describing the claims as false, malicious, and misleading.
In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, released Saturday on the official X handle of the Special Adviser (Information and Strategy) to the President, Bayo Onanuga , the DHQ clarified that the parade was cancelled to allow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu attend a strategic bilateral engagement abroad and to enable the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) maintain operational focus in ongoing military operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.
The DHQ also addressed the publication’s reference to a recent press release regarding the arrest of sixteen military officers, stating that the investigation is part of routine internal disciplinary procedures aimed at upholding professionalism within the military. An investigative panel has been set up, and its findings will be made public upon conclusion.
Reaffirming its commitment to democracy and constitutional order, the DHQ emphasized that the AFN remains loyal to the Constitution and the federal government under the leadership of President Tinubu.
The military further urged the public to ignore unfounded reports intended to incite tension and undermine national stability. It called on citizens to continue supporting security agencies, while reassuring them of collaboration among the executive, legislative, and judicial arms of government to safeguard national peace and development.
