ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – As Nigeria joins the global community in observing International Mother Language Day, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged citizens to safeguard indigenous languages and advocate for the right to freedom of expression to fully realize the benefits of linguistic diversity.

Dr. Tony Ojukwu, the Executive Secretary of NHRC, emphasized the significance of the day, highlighting that Nigeria is a multilingual nation with over 500 languages. He noted that human rights education and advocacy would be more effective when delivered in local languages.

Ojukwu pointed out that while linguistic diversity is a source of national pride and strength, many indigenous languages face the threat of extinction due to factors such as the dominance of English and inadequate support for language preservation efforts.

He stressed that protecting mother languages is not just a matter of cultural preservation, but a human rights issue, as enshrined in international human rights documents like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.

The NHRC Executive Secretary explained that the marginalization of indigenous languages can impede individuals’ rights to freedom of expression and participation in cultural life. Denying people the use of their mother tongue often leads to their exclusion from important decision-making processes.

Ojukwu further noted that the lack of language access has contributed to the marginalization of certain ethnic groups and perpetuated social inequalities.

In his closing remarks, Ojukwu called on the government and relevant stakeholders to take meaningful actions to protect and promote Nigeria’s linguistic diversity. He also emphasized the need for comprehensive language policies
