ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, has called on staff of the Commission to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a vital tool for improving efficiency and strengthening human rights protection in Nigeria.
Ojukwu made the call on Tuesday while delivering a welcome address at a two-day training on AI in the workplace, organized by the Commission held at Amor Hotel Abuja.
He described the training as timely and forward-looking, noting that rapid technological advancements are reshaping workplaces globally, with AI playing a central role in decision-making, service delivery, and institutional operations.
“As a Commission with a critical mandate to promote and protect human rights, we must not be left behind,” he said, stressing the need for the agency to harness emerging technologies responsibly to enhance its performance.
The Executive Secretary commended the organizers for their foresight and revealed that participants were carefully selected across departments and units to ensure inclusiveness and effective knowledge dissemination throughout the Commission.
He urged participants to actively engage in the training sessions, interact with the resource person, and apply the knowledge gained to practical aspects of their work, including data management, financial processes, case handling, research, and administrative duties.
Ojukwu emphasized that the training goes beyond theory, noting that its true value lies in the ability of staff to translate AI knowledge into improved productivity and service delivery.
While advocating the adoption of AI, he also cautioned that its use must be guided by strong ethical standards, particularly in areas such as human rights, data protection, and accountability.
He encouraged participants to take advantage of the interactive nature of the in-house programme to foster collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing within the Commission.
Reaffirming management’s commitment to staff development, Ojukwu assured continued support for initiatives aimed at equipping personnel with the skills needed to meet modern challenges.
