This is coming as the Independent Investigation Panel on Human Rights Violations by the defunct SARS and other units of the Nigerian Police (IIP-SARS) on Tuesday presented its report to the National Human Rights Commission after the payment of N438 million to 100 victims in the last 10 months. NHRC’s Scribe Restates Commitment Towards Successful Implementation Of Transitional Justice In North East

By Ogechi Okorie The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Chief Tony Ojukwu SAN, has restated the Commission’s commitment to the successful implementation of the Transitional Justice Project in the North East. He emphasized that promoting Reconciliation, Reintegration and Transitional Justice will contribute tremendously to restoring lasting peace in the North East. The Executive Secretary who lamented over the situation in Maiduguri, Borno state at the inaugural Traditional and Religious Leaders Forum on Transitional Justice and Reconciliation in North East Nigeria urged leaders in the area to assist the Commission to facilitate the effective implementation of the pilot project which commenced in 2021. The Chief Custodian of Human Rights in Nigeria cited a recent UNDP report which estimated that there have been about 350,000 direct and indirect deaths linked to the insurgency with over 2 million displaced people in Nigeria and neighboring countries. By Tunde John Despite the incessant security challenges bedeviling the country, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has remained consistent in training personnel of the Nigeria Police Force on the tenets of human rights which is a necessity for effective policing. Executive Secretary of the Commission Chief Tony Ojukwu (SAN) stated this in Abuja during his welcome address at the two-day training on mainstreaming human rights into the operations of law enforcement personnel in Nigeria. According to the NHRC Helmsman, the training was organised by the Commission in partnership with the Nigeria Police Force, CLEEN Foundation, Mac Arthur Foundation, and Network of Police Reform in Nigeria (NOPRIN).
