ABUJA (PRECISE POST)  –   The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of former Inspector General of Police, Dr. Solomon Arase, describing him as a visionary leader and an unwavering advocate for human rights.

In a condolence message signed by the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN, the NHRC extended heartfelt sympathies to Arase’s family, colleagues, and the entire Nigeria Police Force.

Dr. Ojukwu highlighted Arase’s transformative impact on the Nigeria Police Force, especially his commitment to citizen-focused policing and the protection of human rights. One of his notable achievements was the establishment of the Complaint Response Unit, a milestone initiative designed to ensure prompt response to public grievances and enhance police accountability.

“Arase pioneered intelligence-led policing that upheld the constitutional right to the presumption of innocence. He insisted on investigation and intelligence gathering before arrests or detentions — a principle that stands in sharp contrast to current practices where arrests often precede any investigation,” Ojukwu stated.

Even after his tenure as Inspector General, Arase continued to serve the nation as Chairman of the Police Service Commission, where he pursued further reforms and modernisation efforts within the police system. His enduring legacy, Ojukwu said, has made his name synonymous with modern policing in Nigeria.

Beyond his official roles, Arase remained an active and respected member of the human rights community. His dedication to justice and human dignity has inspired a new generation of law enforcement officers and rights defenders.

“Dr. Arase’s humility, intelligence, and commitment to excellence leave a lasting impression on the human rights landscape in Nigeria. He will be deeply missed,” the NHRC said.

The Commission concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and strength for his family in this difficult time.
