ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr Tony Ojukwu, OFR, SAN, has strongly denounced the viral video showing members of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group assaulting a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ms. Jennifer Edema Elohor, in Oba, Anambra State.
Dr. Ojukwu, described the attack as a “gross violation of human dignity” and a direct breach of Nigeria’s Anti-Torture Act, 2017, which criminalizes all forms of torture, cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment, the statement signed by the signed by the Director, Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, NHRC, Fatimah Agwai Mohammed made available to Precise Post on Thursday said.
“It is most disturbing that a group established to protect lives and property could turn around to dehumanize innocent citizens,” Dr. Ojukwu said. “This inhuman and degrading treatment is unacceptable, unlawful, and should be condemned in all ramifications.”
According to the Commission’s findings, the incident occurred in July and was allegedly covered up by the perpetrators until the disturbing footage surfaced online. The NHRC disclosed that although Ms. Elohor has since relocated for her safety, efforts are ongoing to contact her to ensure she receives justice and adequate redress.
Dr. Ojukwu also called on the Inspector-General of Police to provide protection for the survivor and her family, to help facilitate her participation in the prosecution of those responsible.
He expressed grave concern over the rising cases of abuse perpetrated by vigilante groups, noting that NHRC’s office in Anambra State is currently handling multiple human rights violations, including cases of child defilement and enforced disappearances.
The NHRC boss urged Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State to ensure that those involved in the assault are prosecuted under the provisions of the Anti-Torture Act. “Accountability is crucial to deter future violations and to reinforce the rule of law,” he emphasized.
Dr. Ojukwu reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to closely monitor the case and ensure justice for Ms. Elohor and other victims of abuse. He also encouraged citizens to report any incidents of human rights violations to the NHRC, assuring continued collaboration with relevant stakeholders to uphold the rights and dignity of all Nigerians.
