ABUJA (PRECISE POSTBThe National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Shola Aiyebola of Africa Independent Television (AIT), describing him as an exceptional journalist and a tireless advocate for human rights in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on behalf of its management and staff, the Commission said Aiyebola’s passing came as a “rude shock” and represents a monumental loss to his family, colleagues, and the wider human rights community.
The NHRC praised Aiyebola’s courage, professionalism, and integrity, noting that his journalism consistently amplified the voices of victims, exposed abuses, and demanded accountability. According to the Commission, he upheld the highest ethical standards of the profession, with a strong commitment to accuracy, balance, objectivity, and fairness.
Aiyebola was particularly celebrated for his role as producer of the widely respected programme State of Human Rights, aired every Thursday on Kakaaki on AIT. The programme, the NHRC said, became a critical platform for public enlightenment, policy dialogue, and sustained engagement on human rights issues across the country.
“Through his work, Shola ensured that human rights stories were told with empathy and responsibility, always mindful that real lives were at stake,” the Commission said, adding that his belief in the media as a catalyst for social change defined his career.
The NHRC extended its condolences to Aiyebola’s family, the management and staff of AIT, and all who mourn his death, praying for comfort and eternal rest for his soul.
The Commission described his life as meaningful, impactful, and worthy of honor, stressing that his legacy would endure in the standards of excellence he set and the many lives his work touched.
