ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi has commended Nigerian troops for foiling an attempted mass abduction at the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Monguno, Borno State, describing their swift action as a demonstration of courage, patriotism and professionalism.
In a statement shared on his X handle on Sunday, Obi praised the Armed Forces for successfully repelling the attack, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of July 19, 2026, at about 1:30 a.m., saying their decisive intervention prevented what could have become a national tragedy.
According to him, the soldiers’ prompt response saved many innocent students from the trauma of kidnapping and reaffirmed the capability of Nigeria’s security forces when adequately supported and equipped.
“I wish to extend my profound appreciation and highest commendation to the gallant members of our Armed Forces who successfully thwarted a grave kidnapping attempt at the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Monguno, Borno State,” Obi stated.
He stressed that schools must remain safe environments where children can learn without fear of violence or abduction, insisting that every Nigerian child deserves access to education in safety and dignity.
While celebrating the successful operation, Obi urged the Federal Government to adopt a more proactive and intelligence-driven security strategy capable of preventing attacks before they occur.
He called for increased investment in intelligence gathering, modern technology, logistics and personnel welfare to enable security agencies respond more effectively to emerging threats.
“Our security agencies must be provided with the necessary resources, motivation, and modern technology to detect and prevent threats before they occur,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor also expressed solidarity with the students, their families and the entire FGGC Monguno community, while thanking members of the Armed Forces for their unwavering commitment to defending the nation.
Reflecting on his birthday, which coincided with the successful military operation, Obi described the rescue as the greatest gift he could receive.
“As I mark my birthday today, this successful rescue effort is a gift that gladdens my heart — a reminder that, despite our challenges, there are still men and women who stand daily in defence of our nation and its future,” he wrote.
He therefore urged Nigerians to remain united in supporting the nation’s security personnel and in the collective pursuit of a safer, more peaceful and secure Nigeria.
