ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDP), Peter Obi, has called for a shift from a consumption-driven economy to a productive one, insisting that competent, accountable and compassionate leadership is critical to Nigeria’s economic transformation.
Obi made the call on Monday during a roundtable discussion at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) office in Paris, France.
The discussion brought together policymakers, diplomats, development experts, representatives of international organisations and members of the international media to deliberate on Nigeria’s future and its role in an increasingly interconnected world.
According to Obi, strengthening bilateral partnerships and development cooperation is essential to accelerating economic growth, improving citizens’ welfare, creating productive opportunities and promoting sustainable national development.
He maintained that Nigeria possesses the human and natural resources needed to become a united, secure, prosperous and globally competitive nation, but stressed that the country requires leadership that prioritises investment in people and institutions.
Obi identified education, healthcare, productive enterprise, the rule of law and strong institutions as critical areas that must receive priority attention, rather than what he described as a politics of consumption.
“Nigeria’s future is bright, but realising its promise requires deliberate choices,” he said, adding that the country must move “from consumption to production, from poverty to prosperity, and from wasted potential to shared progress.”
The former Anambra State governor also emphasised the importance of good governance, fiscal responsibility and mutually beneficial international partnerships in building an economy that works for all Nigerians.
He said such measures would help restore Nigeria’s standing among the comity of nations and unlock its vast development potential.
Obi reiterated his optimism about the country’s prospects, maintaining that a better Nigeria could be achieved through purposeful leadership, sound economic policies and a commitment to inclusive development.
