AKURE- The Ondo State Government has issued a warning against the transportation of illegal logs and flitches, urging full compliance with regulations aimed at promoting sustainable forestry practices.

Mr Olusegun Odusanya, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (Forestry/Produce sub-sector), issued the warning during a meeting with foresters and uniformed personnel on Wednesday in Akure.

He said that these practices were designed to boost the state’s economy through value-added wood products.

Odusanya reiterated the state’s prohibition on illegal logging, stressing that the movement of such logs within and outside the state was strictly banned.

He also highlighted the need for officers to close all revenue loopholes to strengthen the state’s financial base through collective responsibility.

“The state government is committed to protecting our forests while encouraging value-added wood production in line with sustainable forestry practices.

“As officers, you must provide quality service, avoid sharp and unprofessional practices, and work diligently,” he said.

Odusanya affirmed his commitment to implementing the mandate of Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration, particularly in areas of revenue generation and forest conservation.

He called for the cooperation of foresters to achieve the ministry’s objectives and pledged to address the concerns raised during the meeting.

Earlier, the Director of Forests Management, Mr Joseph Adeyekun, appreciated the permanent secretary for convening the meeting, describing it as a valuable opportunity to address challenges and enhance work efficiency.

Similarly, the Assistant Director of the ministry, Mrs Oluwayemi Johnson, emphasised the need for strict adherence to forest laws to ensure both forest protection and effective revenue generation.

She noted that the ministry had a dual responsibility—to preserve forest resources and to contribute to the state’s economy.(NAN)
