ABUJA (PRECISE POST) The Abia State Government has commenced plans for the development of a seaport at Azumini, with Governor Alex Otti initiating a comprehensive feasibility study for the ambitious infrastructure project in partnership with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC).
The proposed Azumini Seaport is expected to transform Abia into a major economic gateway in Nigeria’s South-East region by providing direct maritime access to Aba’s thriving industrial and manufacturing hub as well as neighbouring states.
According to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Njoku Ukoha, the feasibility study will assess the technical, economic, environmental and social viability of the project, laying the foundation for future investment decisions and regulatory approvals.
The study is expected to examine critical aspects of the proposed port, including dredging requirements, port design specifications, road and rail connectivity, environmental impact assessments, and private-sector financing options.
Government officials believe the project could significantly reduce cargo transportation costs for manufacturers, ease pressure on the nation’s congested ports in Lagos, and create a new logistics corridor linking Abia to international trade routes through the Imo/Azumini Blue River.
The proposed seaport is also seen as a major component of Governor Otti’s “Rebuild Abia” agenda, with the potential to stimulate industrial growth, create thousands of jobs, boost export activities and generate long-term revenue for the state.
Beyond its anticipated impact on Abia’s economy, the project is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure by creating what could become a third major port corridor alongside the existing Onne Port and the Ibom Deep Sea Port.
The state government noted that the outcome of the feasibility study will determine the project’s implementation timeline, investment structure and the process for securing the necessary federal approvals.
If realised, the Azumini Seaport would mark one of the most significant infrastructure developments in the South-East in recent years and further position the region as a strategic player in Nigeria’s maritime and industrial economy.
