ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, has strongly criticized the recent proposal by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to increase the salaries of political office holders by over 100%, calling it a display of “insensitivity” and “greed” in the face of Nigeria’s deepening economic crisis.
Obi, who made the declaration on his verified X handle on Wednesday, said the move has sparked widespread anger among Nigerians and questioned the necessity and timing of such a proposal, given the current erosion of citizens’ living standards.
He described the commission’s priorities as “provocative” and “scandalous,” accusing it of favouring political elites at the expense of the suffering majority.
“The RMAFC’s reckless haste in prioritising the greed of politicians over the desperate needs of the masses is not only provocative but scandalous. It’s a shameless grab for more at the expense of Nigeria’s struggling majority,” he said.
Obi maintained that political office should be viewed as a platform for national service—not a path to personal enrichment. He further expressed deep concern that the RMAFC is focusing on improving the welfare of politicians while ignoring the plight of underpaid public servants, especially security personnel such as the police, who face dangerous working conditions with little compensation.
He called on the federal government and RMAFC to redirect their attention toward public workers, who he described as “the backbone of our country,” urging better wages and living conditions for them.
“We believe that political office is a service to the nation, and not a means to accumulate wealth,” Obi added.
He concluded his remarks with a hopeful message, saying, “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
