ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the United States government’s recent designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC), warning that the development should alarm every patriotic Nigerian.
In a statement released on his X handle on Monday, Obi said the U.S. decision, along with indications of possible military action, underscores the gravity of Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, which he described as “unprecedented.”
Citing figures from Amnesty International, Obi lamented that over 10,000 Nigerians have been killed since May 2023, adding that the scale of bloodshed and destruction of property is both “unwarranted and condemnable.”
“The killing of innocent Nigerians must stop,” Obi said. “This terrible situation is significantly avoidable with competent leadership and governance.”
While acknowledging that insecurity did not begin under the current administration, the former Anambra State governor faulted the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government for what he termed “a lack of competence, commitment, prudent use of resources, patriotism, and passion” to effectively lead the nation.
He called for renewed diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and the U.S., emphasizing that both democracies share a longstanding partnership rooted in regional peace and stability.
“As strategic partners, Nigeria and the U.S. must work constructively and urgently to address these disturbing security concerns,” Obi said. “Our shared goal should be to build a nation where peace, truth, and justice reign.”
