Precise Post can authoritatively report that low police presence in many parts of the country, particularly remote communities where stations are often understaffed, leaving residents vulnerable to rising security threats is the main reason why President Bola Tinubu ordered the immediate withdrawal of police officers attached to Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the country.
Tinubu also directing that the personnel be redeployed to strengthen core policing duties nationwide.
The directive was issued during a high-level security meeting held on Sunday in Abuja with service chiefs, including the heads of the Army, Air Force, Police, and the Department of State Services (DSS).
According to the statement released by the Special Adviser to the President, (Information and Strategy), Bayo Onanuga, under the new policy, VIPs requiring security protection are to henceforth request armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), rather than the police.
The development comes amid concerns over low police presence in many parts of the country, particularly remote communities where stations are often understaffed, leaving residents vulnerable to rising security threats.
To address the challenges, President Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 30,000 new police officers and is working with state governments to upgrade police training facilities nationwide.
Those present at Sunday’s meeting included the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and Director-General of the DSS, Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
