Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after leading Nigeria’s delegation to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), held in Belém, Brazil.

During the conference, Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to a green transition, emphasizing that the country remains a vital voice in global climate action.

He joined other world leaders, development partners, and business executives at the Leaders’ Climate Summit, hosted by Brazil’s President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Delivering Nigeria’s national statement titled “The Rational Soul of Nature,” Shettima called on world leaders to acknowledge the economic value of nature and commit substantial funding toward its protection and restoration.

He stressed that such initiatives must be supported by “predictable, equitable, and accessible funding mechanisms.”

The Vice President further noted that Nigeria’s renewed climate agenda is not merely a vision but “a solemn national commitment to safeguard the planet for future generations.”

On the sidelines of the summit, Shettima held several bilateral meetings focused on carbon market cooperation. According to reports, these engagements aim to unlock between $2.5 billion and $3 billion annually in carbon finance for Nigeria over the next decade, supporting the nation’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
