United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a strong statement urging both the business community and governments to double down on their commitment to tackling climate change. Guterres praised businesses and financial institutions that continue to push forward with credible climate action, despite the many pressures they face in an increasingly challenging economic landscape.
“To those in business, finance, and beyond who remain committed to credible climate action, despite all the pressures, I say: You are on the right side of history. Keep it up,” Guterres remarked, acknowledging the significant challenges facing organizations striving to integrate sustainability into their operations.
However, Guterres also emphasized the crucial role that governments must play in supporting these efforts. He called on policymakers to offer the stability and clarity needed for businesses to make long-term investments in green technologies. “To governments, I say: Get behind them. Provide the policy and regulatory certainty business needs,” he urged.
His comments come at a time when businesses are increasingly recognizing the importance of sustainable practices but are seeking clear, consistent policies that will help them navigate the transition to a low-carbon economy. Guterres’ statement reinforces the need for collaboration between the private sector and government to ensure meaningful progress toward global climate goals.
The UN Secretary-General’s message underscores that while businesses are essential in driving climate solutions, effective policy frameworks are necessary to secure their continued engagement and investment in climate action.
