ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in the forthcoming January 16 general election, Peter Obi has congratulated Spain on winning the FIFA World Cup, describing the champions’ success as compelling evidence that young people, when given the opportunity to lead, can achieve extraordinary results.
Reacting to the conclusion of the global football tournament in a statement posted on his X handle after the tournament, Obi said the competition ended with “the best team emerging victorious,” adding that Spain’s triumph reinforced the importance of merit, competence and youth empowerment.
The former Anambra State governor, who recently celebrated his birthday, described the World Cup finale as yet another memorable birthday gift and said the tournament showcased the immense potential of young people on the world stage.
According to him, the performances witnessed throughout the competition demonstrated that excellence inevitably prevails when talent is properly nurtured and given the right environment to flourish.
“This is yet another fitting birthday gift, further demonstrating that the youth have not only arrived but are proving that excellence, when given the opportunity, will always prevail,” Obi stated.
He noted that the tournament highlighted the values of competence, capacity, character and capability, stressing that these qualities should form the basis for leadership and national development.
Obi argued that the success of the newly crowned world champions offers valuable lessons for Nigeria, urging leaders to create opportunities for young people to contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
“Today, competence, capacity, character, and capability were on full display. It is a powerful reminder that when young people are properly nurtured, entrusted with responsibility, and given the opportunity to lead, they deliver outstanding results,” he said.
Obi maintained that the same principles that produced success on the football field should be replicated across every sector of Nigeria’s economy and public institutions.
He said the country must deliberately invest in its youthful population by creating an enabling environment that rewards merit, innovation and hard work.
Obi added that empowering young Nigerians with quality education, opportunities and leadership responsibilities would accelerate national development and restore confidence in the country’s future.
He therefore reiterated his enduring message of hope, insisting that Nigeria can attain greater heights if competence and merit become the guiding principles in governance and national life.
“A New Nigeria is Possible, and it must be reflected in every endeavour that brings pride, progress, and honour to our nation,” he stated.
