ABUJA (PRECISE POST)  –  The Supreme Court of Nigeria has officially commenced the implementation of its long-awaited Nigerian Case Management System (NCMS), marking a major step towards the digital transformation of Nigeria’s judicial system.

According to the statement signed by Alfa Umar Ahmed, Deputy Director,Information and Public Relations, Supreme Court of Nigeria the initiative was formally launched on Thursday by the Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun at Court Two of the Supreme Court Complex in Abuja alongside the enforcement of the Supreme Court (Mandatory Upload of Electronic Copies of Processes, Record of Appeal, and Other Matters) Practice Directions, 2026.

Describing the development as a defining moment in the apex court’s modernization agenda, the Chief Justice said the judiciary must embrace technology to keep pace with global standards in judicial administration.
“The Judiciary cannot afford to remain on the sidelines of the global shift towards technology in judicial administration,” the CJN declared, describing the launch as “a significant milestone” in the ongoing reforms of the Supreme Court.

The newly introduced Nigerian Case Management System is designed to digitise the entire lifecycle of cases before the apex court, replacing cumbersome paper-based procedures with a secure electronic platform that will preserve court records through comprehensive audit trails and minimise the risks of alteration, loss or misuse.

Under the implementation plan, the first phase of the reform takes immediate effect and makes the electronic upload of court processes compulsory for appeals scheduled for hearing between September and December 2026. Lawyers handling such appeals are required to upload all relevant court documents within the timelines stipulated in the new Practice Directions.
The Court explained that the exercise would subsequently be expanded on a quarterly basis until all pending appeals before the Supreme Court are fully integrated into the digital platform.
According to the CJN, the second phase of the reform will introduce complete electronic filing of court processes, enabling litigants and legal practitioners to file and manage cases through a transparent, technology-driven system without relying solely on physical documentation.
Justice Kekere-Ekun, however, warned legal practitioners against abusing the platform, stressing that only authentic and duly authorised documents should be uploaded to the system.
She cautioned that any attempt to upload forged, altered, unauthorised or otherwise irregular court processes would attract serious legal, regulatory and disciplinary sanctions.
The Chief Justice noted that while the digital transition may encounter initial operational challenges, such issues would be addressed through continuous improvements. She also disclosed that the Supreme Court is undertaking a comprehensive review and verification of all pending appeals and court records to strengthen public confidence in the integrity of its processes.
Justice Kekere-Ekun commended members of the Judicial Information Technology Policy Committee (JITPO-COM), led by Kashim Zannah, as well as the Supreme Court Rules Committee, Litigation Committee and the Chief Registrar, Kabir Akanbi, for their commitment in bringing the project to fruition.
She expressed confidence that the NCMS would significantly improve case management, reduce administrative bottlenecks, enhance efficiency in judicial administration and strengthen public trust in the nation’s apex court.
“The launch of the NCMS marks far more than the introduction of a new technological platform. It signifies a defining milestone in the continuing evolution of the Supreme Court of Nigeria,” the CJN said, adding that the initiative provides a model that could be adopted by other courts across the country.
The Supreme Court reaffirmed its commitment to building a modern, innovative and technologically resilient justice system anchored on the principles of justice, fairness and the rule of law.
