A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has died after reportedly lodging in a hotel in Ekpoma, Edo State.
The incident occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area, Esan West Local Government Area. Police said the lecturer had checked in with a 21-year-old woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
According to the Edo State Police Command, the Command received a report on October 5, 2026, at about 8 pm about the incident. Spokesperson Eno Ikoedem said the lecturer had sent the woman to buy water and upon her return, she found him lying lifeless in the room.
The police confirmed that three persons — the hotel owner, the hotel manager, and the young woman — are currently in custody as investigation continues. The body has been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed Uwuigbe was a staff of the institution but noted the incident happened outside the campus and was a private matter. He added that the woman involved is not a student of the university.
Investigation is ongoing.
