Yoruba Nation Agitation: Benin Republic Extends Igboho’s Detention By Six Months – Counsel

Abuja – The Government of the Republic of Benin has extended the detention of Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho by six months. Counsel for the detained activist, Chief Yomi Aliyyu, said this in a chat with The PUNCH on Sunday night. This is contrary to what a lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, said on Friday that Igboho would soon be released. Aliyyu said the Benin Republic renewed Ignoho’s incarceration despite that there was no criminal charge against him and no extradition request from the Nigerian Government. Terrorism charge: Absence of interpreter stalls arraignment of Igboho’s aides

The planned arraignment of Jamiu Oyetunji and Amudat Babatunde, two aides of Yoruba nationalist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, could not hold on Monday before Justice Obiorah Egwuatu of a Federal High Court in Abuja due to the absence of an interpreter. They are being prosecuted by the Department of State Service, an agency of the Federal Government on a five-count charge bothering on terrorism. The charge dated August 31 was filed at a Federal High Court, Abuja, by S.M Bello, counsel for the claimant. By the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/305/2021, the Federal Government claimed that the defendants were involved in acts of terrorism and possession of prohibited firearms. Sunday Igboho diagnosed with likely kidney problem in Beninise prison -Lawyer

Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho, has been reportedly diagnosed with possible kidney or lungs illness. One of his lawyers, Yomi Aliyyu, made this known in an interview with BBC Yoruba, noting that the rights activist developed the illness in Benin Republic prison custody. According to him, the agitator has also been critically ill and rushed to the hospital for treatment. The PUNCH had reported that Igboho is currently in a detention facility in Benin Republic. The Soka, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, home of the pro-Yoruba self-determination activist was invaded by men from DSS about 1:30am on July 1, 2021, leading to the arrest of 12 of his aides, while Igboho managed to escape arrest. Court awards N20b damages against DSS for raid of Igboho’s house

Justice Ladiran Akintola of Oyo State High Court has directed the Department of State Security (DSS) to pay N20 billion to Chief Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho) for unlawfully invading his Soka, Ibadan house on July 1. Akintola awarded the sum as exemplary and aggravated damages against the secret police in the suit filed by Igboho in which he is seeking N500 billion damages for the invasion. The court also declared the invasion illegal and tongue-lashed the DSS for acting based on what he described as “arbitrary aggression and prejudices” from his agitation for Yoruba nation. Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho has begged his supporters not to vent their anger on one of his lawyers, Ibrahim Salami. Salami is one of his Cotonou-based lawyers. Igboho, had in a leaked audio, expressed anger with Salami’s team of about 10 lawyers in Benin Republic for failing to secure his release after about 50 days in detention. He lambasted all his Benin Republic-based lawyers and complained about his alleged maltreatment and abandonment in prison despite receiving about N5m each. The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a five-count terrorism charge against two detained associates of Yoruba Nation Agitator, Sunday Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho). The charges were filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, after over two months since officers of the DSS arrested and detained the two aides. The defendants in the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/305/2021 are Jamiu Oyetunji and Amudat Babatunde. Igboho speaks from Cotonou prison, slams lawyers for failure to secure his release

Embattled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, has lambasted his over 10 lawyers in Cotonou, Benin Republic, over their collective failure to seek his release after about 50 days in detention. The detained activist spoke in a leaked audio obtained by The PUNCH. He slammed all his Benin Republic-based lawyers led by Ibrahim Salami for not achieving any tangible result on his case like his counsels in Nigeria have been making headway. He also complained over his alleged maltreatment and abandonment in prison by Salami and the other lawyers despite receiving about N5m each.
