AWKA- The Action Alliance (AA) candidate, Chief Jeff Nweke, has decried the growing institutionalisation of voting-buying, describing it as harmful to Nigeria’s democratic development.
Nweke’s condemnation of the alleged act was contained in a statement issued on Thursday in Akwa.
The AA chieftain, speaking against the backdrop of the Aug. 16 Anambra by-election allegedly marred by vote- buying, urged Nigerians of good conscience to rise to unite in condemning the cankerworm or risk losing their future.
According to Nweke, commercialisation of votes is the root cause of corruption that has eaten deep into the fabric of society, and is breeding other forms of evil bedeviling the nation.
“It is unfortunate and shameful in Anambra today, that what we are witnessing is an acute decay of decency in our politics.
“It is a degeneration of sensible political strategy and we have become self- centered, narrow minded and morally deficient in the pursuit of our political goals.
“Let us consider it necessary to carry ourselves in a dignified manner and humility, knowing that we are servants of the people.
“We should all add our voices to condemning vote-buying buying so that the Nov. 8 governorship election will not be a fatal disappointment with accompanied generational consequences.
“Let us fight against vote buying, holistically,” he said.
Nweke said he would continue to focus his campaigns on key issues such as security, social amenities, welfare, and accountability.(NAN)
