The Labour Party (LP) has strongly criticized a recent proposal by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to increase salaries for political office holders, calling it “unjustifiable” amid Nigeria’s current economic hardships.
In a statement issued on Friday by the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Tony Akeni, the LP described the proposal as “unconscionable and tone-deaf,” urging the commission to abandon the plan in favor of policies that benefit ordinary Nigerians.
“This is a misadventure that threatens public trust and undermines the sacrifices of millions of citizens enduring inflation, currency devaluation, and rising cost of living,” Akeni stated.
The party emphasized that Nigerian workers, not politicians, deserve urgent financial relief. It called on RMAFC to instead focus on increasing the national minimum wage, which currently stands at ₦70,000.
Citing a recent call by the United States Government encouraging Nigeria to raise its minimum wage, Akeni added, “If a foreign government can express concern for the welfare of our struggling citizens, the RMAFC has no excuse not to act in the national interest.”
The Labour Party’s statement adds to growing public backlash against any move to increase salaries for political elites while millions of Nigerians face deepening economic struggles.
