JOS – As part of its environmental protection advocacy, the Rotary Club of Naraguta has educated pupils of L.E.A Primary School in Kunyi-Katse, Lamingo, on the importance of tree planting.
Speaking during the sensitisation campaign on Thursday in Jos, the club’s President, Dr Afam Achoru, said the initiative aimed to raise awareness about environmental conservation and the vital role of trees in combating climate change.
He added that the campaign also sought to instill in pupils a culture of environmental responsibility through green initiatives, which were key to a sustainable future.
Achoru announced that the club would plant 30 tree seedlings within the school premises as a practical demonstration of how to plant and care for trees.
He urged the school’s management to ensure the seedlings were nurtured to maturity.
Earlier, the guest speaker and environmental resource person, Dr Kingsley Okeke-Agulu, sensitised the pupils on the many benefits of trees, including air purification, erosion prevention, and biodiversity enhancement.
In response, the Head Teacher of the school, Mr Dauda Izang, commended the Rotary Club for the initiative and assured that the trees would be protected and nurtured, promising that none would be cut down.
Similarly, Mr Yohanna Ayuba-Igyem, the community leader of Kunyi-Katse Gwafan Lamingo, lauded the gesture, saying the trees would serve as windbreakers and improve air quality in the community.
Reports that the pupils expressed excitement about the project and pledged to care for the trees and share the knowledge gained with others in their communities.(NAN)
