Owerri (Precise Post) — Poised in a renewed effort to curb sexual and gender-based violence in academic institutions, the Imo State Police Command has retrained 30 Gender Desk Officers through a strategic partnership with the Alliance for Africa Initiative.
The one-day capacity-building workshop, held on July 16 at Rockview Hotel in Owerri, was themed “Systematic Approaches to Addressing Sexual Harassment in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions.” Officers drawn from the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and police divisions across Imo State were equipped with modern, survivor-centered strategies for handling cases of sexual harassment in schools.
The training emphasized empathy, confidentiality, professionalism, and collaboration among agencies as key principles in responding to gender-based violence. According to the Officer in Charge of the Gender Desk Unit, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, the initiative supports the broader vision of the Inspector-General of Police to institutionalize gender-sensitive policing nationwide.
“The retraining of these officers reflects our commitment to creating safe and supportive learning environments across tertiary institutions in the state,” she said.

The Imo State Police Command also applauded Mrs. Iheoma Obibi and the Alliance for Africa Initiative team for their continued dedication to promoting social justice. The Command reassured Imo residents—particularly students and staff of tertiary institutions—of its unwavering resolve to respond effectively to gender-based violations.
The initiative marks a significant milestone in enhancing the accountability and responsiveness of police operations relating to gender-based violence in Imo State.
