ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – President Bola Tinubu has officially declared an end to the state of emergency in Rivers State, effective from midnight today.
The decision follows what the president described as a “groundswell of a new spirit of understanding” and a renewed commitment to democratic governance among key stakeholders in the state.
In a statement released on the X handle of the Special Adviser, (Information and Strategy) Bayo Onanuga, personally signed by President Tinubu on Wednesday, he expressed satisfaction with the progress made since the emergency rule was imposed six months ago.
“From the intelligence available to me, there is a robust readiness and potent enthusiasm on the part of all stakeholders in Rivers State for an immediate return to democratic governance,” the president said. “This is undoubtedly a welcome development for me and a remarkable achievement for us.”
President Tinubu noted that with the return to normalcy, there was no justification to prolong the emergency any further.
“I therefore do not see why the state of emergency should exist a day longer than the six months I had pronounced at the beginning of it,” he stated.
As part of the transition back to civilian administration, the president announced that Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Odu, Speaker Martins Amaewhule, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly will resume their official duties starting Wednesday, September 18, 2025.
The president also used the occasion to urge all state governors and legislative assemblies across the country to prioritise peace, order, and good governance.
“It is only in an atmosphere of peace, order, and good government that we can deliver the dividends of democracy to our people,” Tinubu emphasized.
He concluded his address with a reaffirmation of his commitment to national unity and democratic values.
“Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the president declared.
Precise Post recalls that the emergency rule in Rivers State was declared in March 2025 following escalating political tensions and threats to public order.
