Abuja, Nigeria – Minister of Works and former Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, has advised the Southeast region to move beyond political sentiments and embrace strategic alliance-building if it hopes to produce Nigeria’s president in the future.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 4, Umahi declared that the dream of an Igbo presidency in 2027 is unrealistic, urging the Southeast to instead throw its full weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid as a pathway to national trust and eventual leadership.
“We must not be deceived again,” Umahi said. “President Tinubu must receive up to 90 percent of the Southeast vote in 2027 to cement this relationship. Enough of darkening counsel without knowledge in the Southeast. We must rise to educate our people.”
Avoid Politics of Hatred, Embrace Strategy – Umahi
The Minister emphasized that political influence is earned through coalition-building and national integration, not isolation or grievance politics.
“If we want to be president, we must avoid the politics of hate, misinformation, and sentiments,” he said. “We must support other regions, and in return, with God’s help, other regions will support us. One day, we will be number one — but not in 2027.”
He also praised President Tinubu for showing what he called “unwavering love and fairness” to the Southeast since assuming office, stating that the region should reciprocate with total loyalty and electoral support.
Support for Southeast Governors
Umahi called for unity within the Southeast and expressed strong support for the region’s governors, urging citizens to rally behind their leadership for continued political stability and regional progress.
“I appeal to our people to support our governors and our dear President in their second terms. This unity is the key to our long-term political aspiration,” he added.
Context: The Path to Igbo Presidency
Calls for an Igbo presidency have grown louder in recent years, especially following the 2023 elections. However, Umahi’s statement reflects a pragmatic shift — encouraging the region to first build national trust, demonstrate political loyalty, and position itself strategically for 2031 and beyond.
