ABUJA FCT – The event unfolding within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is going the way of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike as the party has endorsed the Rivers State congress.
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP made this decision during a meeting at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.
The NWC, led by acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, approved the Rivers State congresses and postponed the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to October 24. This move is seen as a victory for Wike, who has been at odds with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other PDP governor
A senior NWC member revealed that Wike’s loyalists within the PDP NWC secured the approval of the Rivers State congresses and the postponement of the NEC meeting. “They have achieved their aim. Wike has again defeated the PDP governors as the NWC approved the Rivers and other states’ congresses,” the source said.
The PDP Governors Forum, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, had backed Fubara, calling for a review of the Rivers State Congresses. However, Wike threatened to create chaos in the governors’ states if they interfered in Rivers State matters.
The NEC meeting, originally set for August, was first moved to September 26 and has now been rescheduled to October 24. This decision may not hold, as the party’s internal crisis continues to unfold.
The endorsement of the Rivers State congress is a significant blow to Fubara and the PDP governors, who had sought to challenge Wike’s influence in the party. The development highlights the deepening divisions within the PDP ahead of the NEC meeting.
