by Edit

Abuja (Precise Post) – The Foreign Affairs minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, has said that Nigeria will not severe ties with South Africa despite such calls from some quarters as a result of the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians.

Speaking on Friday, September 6th, to the Senator correspondents at the National Assembly after a closed door meeting with the Senate Committee on Diaspora, Onyeama said if such step is taken, Nigerians living in South Africa would suffer more.

According to him, “currently, statistics indicate that over 800 000 Nigerians currently live legally in South Africa and taking such step would affect their businesses as well as their investments.

He noted that there is also official confirmation that no Nigerian lost his/her life in this attach but said that properties were however lost. Adding that the Federal Government of Nigeria is insisting and will insist that South African government will be made to pay compensation to those who lost their properties.
