ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has challenged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to clearly state his political position amid his reported involvement with the opposition-backed Rainbow Coalition.
Lawal said Wike must decide where his political allegiance lies, arguing that the minister could not simultaneously identify with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and maintain active involvement with other political platforms.
The governor made the remarks while reacting to the growing political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly the activities of politicians associated with the Rainbow Coalition.
According to Lawal, Wike’s continued engagement with the coalition while maintaining his relationship with the APC had created uncertainty over his actual political direction.
He therefore urged the former Rivers State governor to make his position known to Nigerians and political stakeholders, rather than attempting to maintain links with competing political interests.
Lawal stressed that political actors seeking to participate in the 2027 contest should be clear about the platforms they support and the political causes they intend to pursue.
The Zamfara governor’s comments come amid intensified manoeuvring by political parties and influential politicians ahead of the 2027 elections, with several opposition figures and former members of the ruling party exploring possible alliances.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was appointed FCT minister by President Bola Tinubu after the 2023 presidential election.
His appointment followed his open support for Tinubu during the 2023 election despite remaining a member of the PDP.
Since then, Wike has maintained links with politicians across party lines, while a group of politicians known as the G-5 had previously campaigned against the PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, during the 2023 election.
The emergence of the Rainbow Coalition has further complicated the political landscape, with its activities attracting politicians seeking an alternative platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
Lawal’s latest remarks are therefore likely to add to the debate over the political alignments of influential figures as parties begin preparations for the next general elections.
