ABUJA (PRECISE POST)  –  Vice Presidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the forthcoming general election in Nigeria and former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has condemned comments attributed to Islamic cleric, Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, describing them as divisive and capable of undermining national unity.

Kwankwaso, in a statement posted on his X handle on Monday, said he was “deeply concerned” by remarks credited to Jingir at an event in Kano over the weekend, particularly against the backdrop of ongoing political debates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former governor cautioned political and religious leaders against making statements that could promote division and disunity at what he described as a critical moment in Nigeria’s history.

“At this critical moment in our nation’s history, statements that promote division and disunity must be firmly discouraged,” Kwankwaso said.

He expressed particular concern that such rhetoric was coming from a religious leader of Jingir’s stature and influence, stressing that influential leaders had a responsibility to promote peace, unity and reconciliation.

Kwankwaso further declared that the people of Kano did not endorse or support what he described as the cleric’s divisive remarks.

“Let it be clearly stated: the good people of Kano do not endorse or support these divisive remarks,” he said.

The NDC chieftain urged political and religious leaders to uphold truth and promote national cohesion, warning against utterances that could undermine Nigeria’s unity.

“Political and religious leaders alike carry a solemn responsibility to uphold truth, foster unity, and advance reconciliation. We must not lend our voices to utterances capable of undermining the very foundation of our nationhood,” he stated.

Turning to the 2027 elections, Kwankwaso said Nigerians would have an opportunity to assess the performance of the current administration and decide whether it deserved another mandate.

He said the elections would provide Nigerians with an opportunity to reward good governance and reject poor performance through the ballot.

“The 2027 general elections will be an opportunity for Nigerians to reward good governance with resounding support and to reject poor performance at the polls. This administration has earned the latter,” Kwankwaso declared.
