Lagos, Nigeria – The Federal High Court in Lagos has delivered a landmark judgment, convicting two notorious drug traffickers, Ajetsibo Emami and Solomon Akpomuai, in separate rulings for their involvement in large-scale illicit drug operations.
The convictions mark a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing war against drug trafficking, led by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Emami Sentenced for Trafficking Canadian Loud
On August 18, 2025, Justice Deinde Dipeolu found Ajetsibo Emami, 37, guilty on a one-count charge of drug trafficking. He was sentenced to six years in prison, with an option of a ₦50 million fine in lieu of incarceration.
Emami was apprehended on June 28, 2025, in Ikeja, Lagos, during a major bust by NDLEA operatives targeting an international drug syndicate. The raid, which lasted three days, uncovered 24 jumbo bags containing 681 pouches of Canadian Loud — a potent cannabis strain — with a total weight of 414.2 kilograms.
Akpomuai Jailed for Smuggling Over 2,000kg of Skunk
In a separate ruling, Justice Dipeolu also convicted Solomon Akpomuai, 51, for trafficking 2,197.8 kilograms of skunk, another high-grade cannabis strain.
Akpomuai was arrested on June 3, 2025, by Nigeria Customs Service officers along the Sagamu–Ijebu Ode Expressway. The massive drug consignment was discovered concealed in a commercial vehicle. He was later transferred to the NDLEA and charged for possession and trafficking of commercial-scale narcotics.
The court sentenced him to four years’ imprisonment, with an alternative option of a ₦50 million fine.
NDLEA Chairman Commends Convictions
Reacting to the court rulings, NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd) described the convictions as a major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking in Nigeria.
“These convictions send a powerful message: drug traffickers will face the full weight of the law. With continued enforcement, we will rid Nigeria of the scourge of substance abuse,” Marwa said.
NDLEA Arrests Prominent Lagos Cleric for Drug Smuggling
In a related development, NDLEA has confirmed the arrest of Prophet Adefolusho Aanu Olasele, also known as Abbas Ajakaiye, the General Overseer of The Turn of Mercy Church in Lekki, Lagos.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, Prophet Olasele was apprehended on August 3, 2025, at his church premises in Okun Ajah, Ogombo Road, for allegedly coordinating multiple shipments of illicit drugs into Nigeria.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are expected to file charges soon.
Nigeria Ramps Up Drug War
These recent developments underscore the NDLEA’s intensified crackdown on narcotics networks across the country, targeting both high-profile traffickers and unsuspected figures using unconventional fronts — including religious institutions — to smuggle drugs.
