The Ondo State Government has urged residents to remain calm and avoid panic following the circulation of a leaked Department of State Services (DSS) memo warning of a possible attack by the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) on some communities in the state.
The leaked memo, reportedly addressed to the 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Akure, raised concerns about a potential terrorist threat in parts of Ondo.
In response, the government dismissed fears of imminent danger, assuring citizens that proactive measures were already in place to protect lives and property.
In a statement released on Wednesday in Akure, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, explained that the memo formed part of “routine intelligence sharing” between security agencies to strengthen coordination and vigilance.
“The Ondo State Government is aware of the recent security alert memo of the State Security Services addressed to the 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Akure regarding a possible terrorist attack in some parts of the state, which was leaked to the media,” the statement read.
“Such intelligence reports are normal security measures aimed at identifying and preventing potential threats. They are regularly shared among security agencies to boost preparedness and take proactive steps.”
Ajanaku noted that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration is working closely with the DSS, the military, and other security agencies to prevent any possible attacks, particularly in border communities.
“Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa is in constant touch with security agencies. Several steps are being taken to protect residents, especially in border areas,” he added.
“The public can rest assured that the government and security agencies are acting on these reports and have taken necessary precautions to guarantee the safety of lives and property.”
The commissioner emphasised that the state remains one of the most secure in Nigeria due to the collaborative efforts of all security stakeholders.
Residents Urged to Stay Calm and Alert
The government appealed to residents to continue their normal activities but remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security operatives.
“We urge residents to go about their lawful activities without fear but to remain watchful and promptly report any suspicious person or activity to the nearest security agency,” Ajanaku said.
He also cautioned against spreading unverified information that could create unnecessary panic.
The government reiterated that the situation was fully under control, stressing its commitment to maintaining peace and stability across Ondo State.
The leaked DSS memo, which surfaced earlier in the week, had warned of a possible ISWAP infiltration and planned attacks on selected communities. However, security agencies have since intensified surveillance and fortified vulnerable areas as part of preventive efforts.
Officials clarified that the leak does not indicate any lapse in security but rather highlights ongoing collaboration among intelligence and defence agencies to thwart potential threats before they occur.
