The Bayelsa State Government has declared a three-day mourning period in honour of its late Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who died on Thursday, December 11, 2025.

According to Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Ewhrudjakpo collapsed in his office while preparing for a scheduled meeting and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where he was later pronounced dead.

Governor Douye Diri has ordered all flags to be flown at half-mast and extended condolences to Ewhrudjakpo’s family, colleagues, and the people of Bayelsa State.

Mrs. Koku-Obiyai described the deputy governor, aged 60, as “an accomplished public servant” who previously served as Commissioner for Works and represented Bayelsa West District in the National Assembly.

She said his sudden death is “a great loss to the government, the people of Bayelsa, and the nation.”
