‘Tinubu Will Go To Prison’ — Sowore Declares At FCT Court

by Arabella Zikora

Sowore appeared as the court was expected to continue proceedings in the case, but the matter was reportedly adjourned after the magistrate reportedly received an urgent assignment from the National Judicial Council (NJC).

Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has appeared at the Kuje Magistrate Court in Abuja alongside Nnamdi Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu and lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, over a case arising from “Free Nnamdi Kanu” protests held in October 2025.

Sowore appeared as the court was expected to continue proceedings in the case, but the matter was reportedly adjourned after the magistrate reportedly received an urgent assignment from the National Judicial Council (NJC).

In a video from the court premises, Sowore could be heard jokingly telling those around him to “go to prison” before making a remark about who would eventually end up behind bars.

“Let’s go to prison. Come on, come on, come on. She knows who is going to prison,” Sowore said.

He later suggested that the proceedings could be further delayed, saying the magistrate would have been removed from office by the time the matter returned to court.

“By then, the magistrate will have been fired,” he said, laughing.

The case is connected to protests held in October last year by supporters calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Sowore has consistently advocated for Kanu’s release and has criticised the Federal Government’s handling of his prosecution.

Speaking at the court, one of those present said the group had expected the court to sit but was informed that the magistrate had an urgent assignment involving the NJC.

“We got here with the hope that the court will sit. The magistrate is not coming, unfortunately,” the person said.

According to the explanation given at the court, the registrar had informed the parties that the magistrate received a call concerning an urgent assignment with the NJC.

The development left the parties and their lawyers to consider a fresh date for the proceedings.

The prosecutor was reportedly present at the court, with discussions taking place on a possible date in April or May.

Sowore, however, suggested that the prosecution should withdraw the case rather than seek another adjournment.

“The prosecutor should come and withdraw their case,” he said.

The activist has remained one of the prominent voices campaigning for Kanu’s release, alongside lawyers, family members and other supporters who have repeatedly criticised the Federal Government over his continued detention and prosecution.

The court proceedings stem from demonstrations held last year under the “Free Nnamdi Kanu” campaign. The protests were part of wider calls by Kanu’s supporters for his release from detention.

Sowore’s appearance at the Kuje court comes amid his continued criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and his preparations for the 2027 presidential election.

The activist has repeatedly accused the government of violating the rights of Nigerians and has called for major political and institutional reforms.

During his latest appearance, Sowore also appeared to address the broader political situation while speaking to people at the court premises.

He said the current administration and political authorities would eventually face consequences for their actions, declaring that President Tinubu would ultimately go to prison.

“Tinubu is going to prison,” Sowore said.

The remark comes after Sowore’s repeated attacks on the Federal Government over what he describes as corruption, human rights violations and poor governance.

The court’s adjournment means the parties are expected to return on a new date to be communicated by the court.
