No fewer than 700 residents of Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State benefited from a free medical outreach organised by the Akpabio Cares Initiative, a humanitarian programme associated with the Office of the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.
The medical outreach, which took place on Saturday, provided free medical consultations, essential drugs and eyeglasses to members of the community.
Information on the outreach was contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the Senate President’s media team.
The Surulere exercise was the third edition of the initiative in two years, following similar outreaches held in Osogbo, Osun State, and Yankaba in Kano State.
Speaking at the event, the convener of the programme and Senior Legislative Aide to the President of the Senate, Ahmed Mustapha, said the outreach was part of ongoing efforts aimed at supporting access to basic healthcare services.
According to him, the Lagos edition targeted about 700 beneficiaries for free consultations, medications and eyeglasses.
Mustapha also explained that the choice of Lagos as the location was informed by the national character of the office held by the Senate President.
He noted that as Senate President, Akpabio’s activities and interventions are intended to reach different parts of the country.
Some beneficiaries who spoke at the event expressed appreciation to the organisers for the intervention.
Mustapha added that the Akpabio Cares Initiative is expected to continue in other parts of the country, with the next medical outreach planned for the North Central geopolitical zone.
