ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Tuesday paid courtesy visits to former Heads of State, General Ibrahim Babangida and General Abdulsalami Abubakar, as well as Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, reaffirming the Nigerian Army’s commitment to operational excellence, improved security and stronger collaboration with political leaders.
During the visits, the COAS outlined ongoing reforms within the Nigerian Army aimed at strengthening training, doctrine and operational readiness across all formations, the statement released on the X handle of the Headquarters of the Nigerian Army signed by the
Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel APPOLONIA ANELE on Tuesday said.
The statement disclosed that the Army is conducting coordinated exercises in its training institutions nationwide to ensure troops receive practical, mission-oriented instruction.
According to the statement, the exercises are also designed to assess the operational posture of combat units, identify gaps and determine the need for additional troops or the establishment of new formations where necessary.
Lt Gen Shaibu stressed the strategic importance of Niger State, citing its vast landmass and security relevance.
“We are consolidating all available resources and leveraging technology to address security challenges effectively. Niger State holds a special place in our history; I have previously served here as a Training and Doctrine Commander, and many of my colleagues also share a deep connection with this state. It is, in many ways, regarded as home,” he said.
The COAS also revealed that he had undertaken operational visits to the 31st, 11th and 18th Brigades in Bida to assess operational gaps and deploy resources to curb recent insecurity in parts of the state.
In their responses, Generals Babangida and Abdulsalami welcomed the Army Chief, praising his professionalism, experience and leadership vision. They commended the Nigerian Army for sustaining high standards of discipline and operational effectiveness, while congratulating Lt Gen Shaibu on his appointment and praying for wisdom and courage as he confronts evolving security challenges.
Representing Governor Bago, the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Dr Yakubu Garba, expressed appreciation for the Nigerian Army’s proactive support in addressing security concerns across the state. He acknowledged lingering challenges but voiced confidence in the Army’s partnership with the state government.
“We are confident that, with the partnership of the Nigerian Army, we will overcome current challenges and protect lives and communities,” he said.
The visits underscore the Nigerian Army’s resolve to enhance operational readiness, deepen cooperation with state authorities and safeguard national security.
