ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday declared a nationwide security emergency, unveiling the most far-reaching security measures of his administration in response to escalating attacks across multiple states.
In a national address, Tinubu authorised the police and armed forces to immediately recruit thousands of new personnel, including 20,000 additional police officers, raising total new police intake to 50,000. He also approved the temporary use of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps as rapid-training depots to speed up deployment.
Officers withdrawn from VIP protection duties, the President said, will undergo crash retraining before being dispatched to high-risk zones. He added that the Department of State Services (DSS) has been cleared to deploy all trained forest guards and recruit more personnel as part of a nationwide sweep to flush out terrorists and bandits. “There will be no more hiding places for agents of evil,” he declared.
Tinubu described the situation as a “national emergency,” calling for collective action from citizens and institutions. “These times require all hands on deck. As Nigerians, we must all get involved in securing our nation,” he said.
The President commended security agencies for the successful rescue of 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi and 38 abducted worshippers in Kwara, pledging continued efforts to free the remaining students abducted in Niger State and others still held captive.
Tinubu also reaffirmed support for state-level security outfits and urged the National Assembly to begin legislative work that would enable states to establish their own police forces where necessary. He further advised states to reassess boarding school locations and encouraged religious centres in vulnerable areas to seek consistent security protection.
Addressing the persistent herder–farmer conflicts, Tinubu urged herder associations to embrace ranching and work with the newly created Livestock Ministry. He called for the surrender of illegal weapons, warning that open grazing must end for “national harmony” to be achieved.
The President offered condolences to families affected by recent attacks in Kebbi, Borno, Zamfara, Niger, Yobe and Kwara, and paid tribute to fallen soldiers, including Brigadier-General Musa Uba. He warned that the government’s restraint should not be mistaken for weakness. “This administration has the courage and determination to keep the country safe,” he said.
Calling on Nigerians to remain calm and vigilant, Tinubu urged citizens to report suspicious activities and support security operations. “We are in this fight together, and together we shall win,” he affirmed.
The address concluded with a prayer for national unity and the protection of Nigeria’s armed forces.
