UMUAHIA (PRECISE POST) – Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to pursuing sustainable development over mere economic growth as he hosted the 2024 Nobel Laureate in Economics, Prof. James A. Robinson, and a delegation of distinguished scholars from the United States at the Government House, Umuahia.
The delegation, led by former Minister of Education and Health, Prof. Ihechukwu Madubuike, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Otti to explore avenues for research collaboration, policy development and knowledge exchange aimed at strengthening Abia State’s development model.
Welcoming the visitors, Governor Otti congratulated Prof. Robinson on winning the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics, describing the globally acclaimed development economist as a scholar whose work has shaped contemporary thinking on economic transformation and institutional development.
The Governor stressed that development economics remains the most significant branch of economics because it focuses on improving the quality of life of citizens rather than merely recording increases in economic output.
According to him, economic growth alone does not necessarily translate into genuine development, noting that rising Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures can be misleading if they fail to improve the welfare of the people.
“You can have economic growth without development. A country may record a GDP growth of three or five per cent, but if its population is growing much faster, then that growth becomes meaningless because there are more people to cater for with limited resources,” Otti explained.
Drawing from his background as a first-class Economics graduate of the University of Port Harcourt, the Governor said his administration deliberately designs policies that tackle the root causes of poverty instead of focusing on impressive economic statistics.
He identified unemployment, low productivity and inadequate productive inputs as key drivers of poverty, stressing that governments must break the vicious cycle that perpetuates underdevelopment through deliberate interventions that improve citizens’ productive capacity.
Governor Otti further noted that creating an enabling environment for businesses and attracting investments must go hand in hand with equipping citizens with the skills and capacity to take advantage of emerging opportunities.
He added that injecting capital into an economy without developing the human resources required to utilise it effectively often results in poor outcomes.
The Governor also expressed the readiness of the Abia State Government to collaborate with Prof. Robinson on research, public policy formulation and institutional reforms, saying his administration remains open to continuous learning and global best practices.
Speaking during the visit, Prof. Robinson, a professor at the University of Chicago, said he was delighted to visit Abia State and expressed interest in understanding Governor Otti’s development approach, Nigeria’s institutional challenges and areas where academic collaboration could contribute to sustainable progress.
Also speaking, Prof. Leander Heldring of Northwestern University observed that the prosperity of nations depends largely on the quality of their institutions and the decisions made by their people. He commended the developmental strides recorded in Abia State and praised the reforms being implemented by the Otti administration.
Imo-born academic, Prof. Chima Korie of Marquette University, who recently reviewed Prof. Madubuike’s book, Nigeria, a Crumbling State, said the progress being recorded in Abia offers hope that good governance can transform Nigerian states.
“If every state in Nigeria were governed the way Abia is being governed today, there would be little need to write books describing Nigeria as a crumbling state,” he remarked, adding that Nigerians in the diaspora are proud of the reforms taking place in the state.
Earlier, Prof. Madubuike explained that the visit was designed to strengthen ties between Abia State and the global academic community through research collaboration, policy advisory support, leadership development and institutional capacity building.
He described Abia under Governor Otti as a model of prudent economic management, noting that the administration’s emphasis on fiscal discipline, transparency, productivity and value for money closely reflects the development principles championed by Prof. Robinson.
The President of the Abia State Leadership Academy (ASLA), Prof. Kenneth Kalu, also highlighted the academy’s role in grooming ethical and institution-focused leaders capable of driving sustainable development, noting that Prof. Robinson’s scholarship has profoundly influenced its leadership philosophy.
The meeting was attended by the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, members of the State Executive Council and other senior government officials.
