ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced deep concern over the recent escalation of armed clashes along the border between Cambodia and Thailand, calling for an immediate end to hostilities and urging both nations to resolve their differences through peaceful dialogue.
In a statement released on his X account on Saturday, Guterres expressed alarm at the intensifying tensions between the neighboring Southeast Asian countries, emphasizing the potential threat to regional stability and civilian safety.
“I am deeply concerned about the recent armed clashes at the border between Cambodia and Thailand,” Guterres said, referring to a series of reported skirmishes that have resulted in casualties and rising fears of further conflict.
The Secretary-General called on both governments to “immediately agree to a ceasefire” and pursue a diplomatic path to defuse the situation. He underscored the importance of dialogue in resolving disputes and reaffirmed the UN’s readiness to assist in any efforts aimed at securing a peaceful resolution.
“I remain available to assist in efforts towards a peaceful resolution of the dispute,” he added.
Precise Post recalls that the border area, which has long been a point of contention between the two countries due to overlapping territorial claims, has seen periodic flare-ups over the years. The latest violence has raised concerns among international observers about the risk of broader instability if tensions are not swiftly de-escalated.
Diplomatic sources say talks between the two governments may be convened in the coming days, though details remain unconfirmed.
