ABUJA (PRECISE POST) – Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2026 general election, Peter Obi has denied reports attributing to him a statement calling on Nigerian soldiers to reject salary increases until after the 2027 general elections.
Obi, who took to his X handle on Tuesday to deny this, described the report as false and urged Nigerians to disregard it, insisting that he has never advocated withholding improved remuneration from members of the nation’s security forces.
In a statement, Obi reaffirmed his “profound respect” for the Nigerian security forces, particularly personnel of the Nigerian Army who, according to him, continue to serve and protect the country under challenging conditions.
He said he had consistently advocated adequate equipment, motivation and protection for security personnel, stressing that the welfare and safety of those defending the nation must remain a priority.
“My concern was palpable when soldiers were lost to insurgents due to a delayed rescue effort, prompting me to question how those defending us could be left vulnerable in their time of need,” he said.
Obi said that if elected President, the well-being, resources, safety and honour of Nigerian soldiers would receive priority under his administration.
“Those who ensure Nigeria’s security must never be relegated to a secondary concern. Our soldiers are deserving of our utmost respect, unwavering support, and a government that will unequivocally stand by them,” he stated.
The former governor pledged that under his leadership, situations in which Nigerian servicemen and women were left exposed and unprotected in the face of danger would be eliminated.
He appealed to Nigerians to disregard what he described as a misleading report and instead focus on his stated vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria.
“I remain committed to articulating a clear and consistent vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria. The realisation of a new and secure Nigeria is indeed POssible,” Obi said.
