A UK medical tribunal has been told that Dr. Suhail Anjum, a consultant anaesthetist at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester, left a patient under anaesthetic during surgery to engage in sexual activity with a nurse in a nearby operating theatre.
According to testimony presented at the hearing, Dr. Anjum requested a “comfort break” during the procedure and asked a colleague to monitor the patient in his absence. However, he allegedly used the time to meet Nurse C in another room, where they were discovered in a “compromising position” by another staff member, who reported the incident.
Andrew Molloy, representing the General Medical Council (GMC), confirmed that no harm came to the patient during Dr. Anjum’s absence and that the procedure continued without further incident.
Dr. Anjum has admitted to the allegations and expressed deep regret over his actions.
“It was quite shameful, to say the least. I only have myself to blame,” he told the tribunal. “I offer my sincere apologies to everyone involved and I want the opportunity to put this right.”
He also stated that the incident occurred during a particularly “stressful time” for his family.
