AWKA – Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra has lauded the bravery and sacrifices of Nigerian servicemen and women in preserving national peace and security.
Soludo made the remarks on Sunday during a thanksgiving service to kick-off the commemoration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, in Awka.
He reaffirmed his administration’s support for the military and paid glowing tribute to the courage and professionalism of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
“This event is aimed at fostering unity and strengthening national security.
“It also serves as a profound reminder of the selflessness of our fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price in service to their fatherland.
“I urge Nigerians to honour their memories by promoting peace, unity and patriotism,” he said.
Also speaking, the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, described the Armed Forces Remembrance Day as a solemn occasion dedicated to honouring the sacrifices of servicemen and women.
Ezeokafor called on Nigerians to resist the temptation of selfish interests and instead embrace the pursuit of the common good for national unity and peace.
The bishop also offered prayers for the safety of serving military personnel and other security operatives, as well as for their families, urging God to grant them protection and strength in the discharge of their duties.
Reports that the Armed Forces Remembrance Day which is marked every Jan. 15, is to honour members of the Nigerian Armed Forces who fought in the first and second World Wars, and those who served or are still serving in various peace support operations worldwide as well as those who fought in the Nigerian civil war.
The day is to celebrate both the dead and the living heroes including all those who suffered various deprivations as a result of wars.(NAN)
