The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for zoning their 2027 presidential tickets to the South two years before the general elections.
ADC spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, speaking on Channels Television on Tuesday, argued that the move reflects a lack of concern for Nigerians, showing that political elites are more focused on power struggles than addressing the needs of the people.
“Too Early, Too Political” — Abdullahi
Abdullahi questioned the urgency behind the zoning decision, noting that the 2027 general elections are still two years away.
“Why are we behaving in such a way that makes Nigerians feel the political class does not care about them? Why take this decision so early? They are either playing a predetermined game or trying to court certain individuals as potential candidates,” he said.
According to him, the timing suggests that both APC and PDP are strategizing to lure specific aspirants into the race, instead of focusing on governance and national development.
Background: PDP and APC’s Decisions
On Monday, the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) announced that its 2027 presidential ticket had been zoned to the South.
The ruling APC, meanwhile, has repeatedly endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the party’s likely sole candidate for the next election.
The early zoning decision has sparked debates across political circles, with critics warning that such moves could alienate citizens who expect parties to prioritize governance over political maneuvering.
ADC’s Position on 2027 Elections
Addressing questions on ADC’s own presidential candidate, Abdullahi assured that the party has a pool of credible and qualified aspirants. He stressed that the ADC would ensure a transparent and fair process in choosing its flagbearer.
He dismissed speculations that the opposition coalition was designed to promote a single candidate, pointing out that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had already publicly declared his 2027 ambition.
“If this coalition was put together for him, why would Atiku need to announce he is running? Don’t forget that leaders like Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and others are also eyeing the presidency. They all have an equal chance under the ADC platform,” Abdullahi explained.
The Bigger Picture
Analysts say the early zoning decisions by the APC and PDP could heighten political tension ahead of 2027, while also raising questions about whether Nigeria’s major parties are more interested in electoral dominance than national unity.
For now, the ADC insists it will focus on providing Nigerians with a credible alternative and a level playing field for all aspirants.
