Germany considers special visas to recruit foreigners into its military

GERMANY- Germany is considering a bill that will allow foreign citizens comprising those from countries not members of the European Union, to be recruited into its army. Disclosing this to DW, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, a member of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the head of the German parliament’s defence committee, revealed that the scheme will give the foreign beneficiaries the opportunity to become German citizens. According to the German lawmaker, the beneficiaries could be citizens from EU countries, former EU countries like the United Kingdom, and neutral Switzerland and even NATO. She said, “I think that Europe also needs to be considered further, namely those who may live in European states but which do not yet belong to the European Union, but which may well be in accession negotiations. “I don’t want to tie it down like that, because it has to be legally scrutinised. Ms Strack-Zimmermann added, “We are already working towards the goal of having a European army in the long term. And that’s why in the long term, if you think in a European way, it can …

Democracy needs ‘courage and cooperation,’ says German president

BERLIN- German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called on citizens to embrace democracy, rather than turn their backs on it, in a Christmas address coming at the close of a turbulent year. “Yes, we yearn for clarity. Yes, it is reasonable to expect those in positions of political responsibility to struggle for the right course, but also to give answers that help us as a country,” said Steinmeier. “You as citizens should be able to expect democrats to work together when what is at stake is our common whole,” Steinmeier told the public. His reference to democrats comes amid growing support for the far right in Germany, and burgeoning discontent with the government. “Many have missed that. Some turn away, others complain about everything and everyone,” he said, in a speech shared in advance by his office. But in a democracy, “when the going gets tough, there are better counsellors than anger and contempt,” Steinmeier said. “Better counsellors than those who pretend that there is always one simple answer to the questions of the future. They include courage and cooperation,” he added. …

2022 World Cup: Germany Book Ticket After Beating North Macedonia

Skopje – Germany became the first country to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar on Monday with Timo Werner scoring twice in a 4-0 win away to North Macedonia. The fifth victory in five matches under new coach Hansi Flick, matching the record of predecessor Joachim Loew, has given Germany an unassailable lead at the top of Group J. But that was also due to to Armenia losing 1-0 to Romania elsewhere. Germany dominated throughout against the side who inflicted only a third-ever World Cup qualifying defeat against them at home in March. But they needed until the second half to make the breakthrough. Kai Havertz tapped into an empty net to cap a fine counter-attack in the 50th minute to break the North Macedonian resistance. The lively Werner then smashed a quick-fire brace before teenager Jamal Musiala completed the rout with his first senior international goal. Germany have 21 points from eight games before concluding the campaign in November at home to Liechtenstein and away to Armenia, who are now fourth on 12 points. Romania, on …

Big Tech Giants ‘Competing With States’, Putin Warns After Russia Tells Internet Firms To Delete Posts Backing Navalny Protests

By Our Reporter Abuja (Precise Post) – Russian President Vladimir Putin today sounded a warning about the influence of global tech giants which he said were ‘competing’ with national governments, after Russia told internet firms to take down posts that had fuelled Alexei Navalny-inspired protests. Putin told the virtual Davos summit that tech companies were ‘not just economic giants… in some areas they are already de facto competing with the state’. ‘We just saw it all in the United States,’ he added, referring to the Capitol riot incited by Donald Trump which led to the then-president being banned from Twitter – a move which has caused disquiet in several European countries. Putin’s comments come as Russia ramps up pressure on the activities of foreign tech giants, which are not subject to the same state censorship as most media outlets. Moscow earlier this week accused US tech platforms of interfering in Russia’s internal affairs during the anti-government protests egged on by Navalny. Ahead of the Navalny rallies, Russia’s media watchdog Roskomnadzor ordered several online platforms, including YouTube and Instagram, to delete …
